Jack Cowan and I will be leading a bird walk starting at 8 a.m. Sunday, May
6, at Lost Valley Trail off Highway 94 in St. Charles County.

We scouted the trail this past Sunday and easily had a singing cerulean
warbler from the parking lot and other ceruleans along the trail. A
worm-eating warbler sat on an exposed branch over the trail past the split.
Other expected birds for the walk include blue-winged warbler,
yellow-throated warbler, common yellowthroat, Kentucky warbler,
yellow-breasted chat, Louisiana waterthrush, indigo bunting, and white-eyed
vireo. Other possible species include black-and-white warbler, American
redstart, Baltimore oriole, orchard oriole, yellow-billed cuckoo,
rose-breasted grosbeak and red-eyed vireo.

To get to Lost Valley Trail, take Interstate 64/Highway 40 to Highway 94.
Take Highway 94 south like you're going to Augusta. A few miles down the
road past the police shooting range is a large gravel parking lot just
before a concrete slab bridge at the bottom of a steep hill. This is the
Lost Valley parking lot.

The path is wide and level, although it can get muddy after a rain. Be
prepared to walk just over 2 miles round trip. You might want to bring
water.

The walk will likely end by 11 a.m. Depending on what else is going on that
day, some people may head to the Blue Grosbeak Trail (blue grosbeak, yellow
warbler, prairie warbler, Bell's vireo), Busch Conservation Area (yellow
warbler, American bittern) or the Katy Trail Weldon Spring Access (painted
bunting, lark sparrow, bobolink, dickcissel) after the walk.
