Mobirders:
I was able to bird for a little while (11:30am-1:30pm) while walking the paved trail near my new residence in Liberty. The entrance is at the junction of Liberty Drive and Kingston Drive. The trail follows a creek and goes through some decent riparian habitat. In spite of the winds, 32 species were identified. Highlights:
Yellow Rumped Warbler-18+
Ruby-Crowned Kinglet-12+
Orange-Crowned Warbler-5
Louisiana Waterthrush-3
Northern Waterthrush-1 (Seems early, but I got great looks at this bird; leg color, throat/breast, eyestripe, bill length, tail bobbing, and callnote right on for Northern. As I watched, the bird broke into full song, leaving no doubt)
Great Crested Flycatcher-1
Purple Finch-1 (male taking a bath!)
House Wren-3
Lincoln's Sparrow-1
SORA-1 (!) Not an officially rare bird, but the last thing I was expecting to flush out of the little patch of cattails/grass!!
Sharp-Shinned Hawk-1
The oddity of the day was watching an Orange-Crowned Warbler picking insects (?) off of a shed snake skin hanging in a tree! Must have been some good eatin', as the OCWA was run off by a larger Yellow-Rumped Warbler shortly thereafter.
Good Birding,
Doug Willis
