This is the Thursday, March 29, 2007 Missouri Rare
Bird Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society
of Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.

** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005).  Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the

COLUMBIA/CENTRAL

On Friday, March 23, Brad Jacobs observed at least 10
EURASIAN TREE SPARROWS and 2 HARRIS’S SPARROWS in
Centralia (Boone Co.).

Jonathan Pons reported the HARRIS’S SPARROW, first
reported by Jean Leonatti on January 6, was still
present on Saturday, March 24, in “the brushpile” at
Bradford Farm (Boone Co.).  


NORTHEAST

On Friday, March 23, Patrick Harrison observed a
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at La Plata City Lake (Macon Co.).


At Long Branch Lake (Macon Co.) Kim March reported
seeing 5 EARED GREBES by the dam on Saturday, March
24.  A follow up trip by the Harrison family on
Sunday, March 25, produced 4 EARED GREBES at the same
location.

On Sunday, March 25, Phil Wire reported that 3 GREATER
PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were present at the lek in western
Adair Co.

Also on Sunday, March 25, Phil Wire observed two
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS at Union Ridge CA (Adair Co).

On Wednesday, March 28, Patrick Harrison observed a
GOLDEN EAGLE soaring over the train tracks at Ted
Shanks CA (Pike Co.).  


NORTHWEST

On Thursday, March 22, Peter Kondrashov reported
TRUMPETER SWANS were still present at Squaw Creek NWR
(Holt Co.).  Peter observed 2 in Eagle Pool and 7 in
Pintail Pool.  On Friday, March 23, Larry Lade
observed 6 TURMPETER SWANS and also heard vocalizing
SANDHILL CRANES out in the marsh.  However, was unable
to see the later.  Only 1 juvenile TRUMPETER SWAN was
located on Wednesday, March 28, when Larry Lade
returned to Squaw Creek NWR.

At Mozingo Lake (Nodaway Co.) on Friday, March 23,
Peter Kondrashov observed at least 5 GREATER SCAUP. 


SOUTHEAST

At the home of Wes and Claudia Mueller, Cape
Girardeau, an immature RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues
visiting their feeder since late October 2006.  Wes
was able to keep the feeders thawed through the
winter.  If interested in obtaining directions to view
this bird please call the Mueller's first at
573-334-4555. 


ST. LOUIS AREA

On Friday, March 23, Dave Rogles found a HARRIS’S
SPARROW near the maintenance shed at the original BK
Leach unit (Lincoln Co.).  The bird was observed in
the ditch just past the shed.  The bird was observed
again by Tom Borman and Dave on Saturday, March 24, at
this same location.

Dave Rogles observed another HARRIS’S SPARROW along
the Weldon Springs Trail (referred to as the Blue
Grosbeak Trail by local birders) at Weldon Springs CA
(St. Charles Co.) on Friday, March 23.  The bird was
observed again by Connie Alwood on Saturday, March 24,
on the right, just past the iron bridge. 

SOUTHWEST

On Sunday, March 24, Jonathan and Michelle Pons
observed at least 6 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS at
Taberville Prairie CA (St. Clair Co.).  In addition,
they observed a single BLACK VULTURE in flight with
Turkey Vultures over the conservation area.
