Went down to Castlewood SP this eve in hopes of photographing some
dispalying woodcocks. No woodcocks around tonight but there was a single vesper sparrow
on the dirt trail behind the office which leads out into the field
Yesterday evening heard 2 or 3fish crows which are starting to trickle
in.Great blue herons have been flying around with nesting sticks heading towards
the large rookery across and down from the boat ramp area
If anyone needs a Barred Owl there have been usually 2- birds that have
been showing up near dusk in trees bordering the southern edge of the field
behind the office. There has also been one hunting along the section of Ries Rd
that goes through the park right near the bottom of the steep hill.Almost hit it
this evening as it flew across the rd!
While some of the "early' arrival warblers like waterthrush , black and
white whose wintering ranges come very close to the state and are no doubt in the
states, possibly even now in MO. Many of the later warblers, passerines and
raptors that winter in far southern Central America and South America seem
to have just started their a their northward trek
Recently saw many homogeneous migrating flocks of our mid to late-spring
migrants like blackburnians,chestnut -sided,mourning,cerulean and golden-wing
warblers which just now are starting to trickle into southern Mexico,
migrating along the Atlantic slope side of the Sierra De Chiapas mt range near the
Guatamalan border.(the bulk of the wintering pop of these migrants actually
winter further south than Mexico)Still going to be a bit of time while before
these little dudes start showing up
Along the Chiapas,Veracruz borders was still seeing large numbers of
broadwings so am wondering if the recent broadwing reports may have been something
else.Possibly red-shoulders?
