Is not Am. Woodcock habitat increasing? It appears to me that more forests 
are growing back than are being cut down. Consider the success of the Wild 
Turkey.

(Quick googling has turned up some articles indicating an overall decline of 
Am. Woodcocks, despite an increase in some states. However, the area covered 
by most surveys is concentrated in the northeast and does not include 
Missouri.)
