Six hearty members of St. Louis Audubon observed at least one, and possibly two, juvenile/1st winter Black-legged Kittiwake today at the south end of Baldwin Lake, IL during the SLAS field trip. The smudge behind the eye, the dark collar and the bold black M on the back were very evident. An attempt to photograph at least one bird was made. The bird was observed 3 times from the same area. Directions: take IL Hwy 3 south to Hwy 154. Take Hwy 154 east to Baldwin, IL. After crossing the Kaskaskia River watch for Conservation Rd. on the left. Turn left and go about 1/4 mile to where the public access ends. There is a fence and small parking lot. This is the southwest corner of Baldwin Lake. The kittiwake was easily observed there and by walking down the road along the levee. Upon arrival, there appeared to be two but later only one was found. There were Fox Sparrows on the west side of the parking area.
