I did a quick spin around Smithville Lake between 12:00 and 1:30 PM
today. I found open water harboring waterfowl at the Camp Branch
Marina (both sides of the bridge), Sail Boat Cove, Honker Cove
(scoping from the W Hwy boat ramp), and near the dam.

Similar to Bob Fisher's experience yesterday, I found the following
species were common in the open areas of water: Gadwall, Mallard,
Common Goldeneye, Common Mergansers (incl. 100+ at Honker Cove), and
HOODED MERGANSERS (15-20 total). In addition...

GR. WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE - (10 near dam)
American Wigeon - (1 at Honker Cove)
Green-winged Teal - (5 at Honker Cove, 5+ at dam)
REDHEAD - (1 at Camp Branch Marina)
Ring-necked Duck - (6 at Camp Branch Marina, more at dam)
Lesser Scaup - (1 at Sail Boat Cove, 3+ at dam)
PIED-BILLED GREBE - (3 at Camp Branch Marina)
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT - (3 at Honker Cove)
Ring-billed Gull - (33+ scattered around lake)

Also of interest was one female goldeneye near the dam with a
striking yellow-orange bill. Difficult distance, light, and wind made
it impossible to study the finer points of this bird (head shape,
etc.) but I didn't think the slope of the forehead looked steep
enough for a Barrow's Goldeneye, nor did the bird's head or bill size
seem to differ from the Common Goldeneye nearby. But... others may
be interested in looking for this bird as the water continues to open
up and the flocks are able to move closer to shore.
