The November/December issue of BIRDING, the American Birding  
Association journal, has an excellent article about the nuances of  
sapsucker i.d. and variant plumages.  Great photos and discussion.   
References include an article by our own Mark Robbins, et al.

The "varius complex" (Yellow-bellied, Red-naped and Red-breasted  
sapsuckers) has given many folks some tough nuts to chew.
