The spike in temps seemed to get the birds moving around this evening at
Castlewood SP,St Louis County
A pair of red-shoulder hawks were active over the WildLife Resue Ctr pond
that borders the western area of the park.
Lots of white-throated,song,swamp sparrows, juncos and still at least one
red-breasted nuthatch coming into the feeders.
Couple of Pileateds tearing into a large dead stump near the office.
At least 1 Barred owl has been roosting in the cedars across from the
office or in the trees behind the office all winter.Changes spots but alwsy in
this general area
The Meremac River was the highest I Have seen it in over a year this past
weekend which is probably the reason for the higher than normal number of
Kingfishers along Kiefer creek that runs through the parK.No doubt the swift muddy
waters are driving the kingfishers up the calmer and clearer river
tributaries in search of food. There were 8 along a 400 yard section of the creek this
evening
Reading the recent ice kill thread checked out some of the bluebird boxes
tonight.Of the 3 I checked 1 box had 2 dead bluebirds in it.Seemd to have been
deceased for about a week.Castlewood has a healthy pop of bluebirds but dont
have much doubt that the recent ice storm has put a dent in their numbers
There were 4 live eastern blues flying around tonight
The number of gulls seems to be increasing with large flocks of streaming
ring-bills coming from the West County Landfill
