Cant really agree with or buy some of the recent anti Duck Stamp comments
Look, the basic reason to buy Duck Stamps is because the program WORKS and
works damn well! Plain and simple! 98 CENTS of every buck spent for Duck
Stamps goes DIRECTLY to wetland habitat /preservation/enhancement/ !!.
One can definitely contribute their money to any organization they wish but
I challenge many groups like Audubon,Nature Conservancys etc to make this
claim or come close to doing the beneficial work the Federal Duck Stamp
program has done for wildlife over the many years its been around
Think it can also be said that probably half of if not more of the people
that buy duck stamps are not hunters anyway
I have several friends who work for US Fish & Wildlife that would testify
to the fact of how money from the purchase of Duck Stamps is making a
difference at various Refuges around the country. Can mean the difference between a
wet or dry marsh cell in some cases

As far as the money going towards the protection of "game" species.Yes,it
indeed does but the ancillary benefits non-game species recieve like your
least bittern yellow warbler, grahams crayfish snake, various dragonflys etc etc
etc and etc is very far reaching. It is also very true that there is sometimes
loss of "non-game "species critical habitat.Overflooding of emergent
vegetation and mudflats and obvious one(However desirable it may be to target some
individual non-game species its kind of unreaslitic since these are public la
nds). But theres alot of these public lands and many people would be
surprised just how many non-game species are saved and recieve benefits that
otherwise may not have been there if it were not for these "game" managed refuges

Is there room for improvements and change to the Federal Duck Stamp
program? With the declining number of hunters nationwide I would say yes and maybe
there should be. The trend in Natl Wildlife Refuge users in many areas is
going towards the non-hunter/non-fisherman crowds. This obviously includes
birdwatchers but also people like botanists,,entomologists, hikers, etc
Maybe the Duck Stamp can be re-named something like the "Natl Wildlife
Heritage Stamp" and/or more money allocated towards more diverse habitats found
on our Wildlife Refuges.
Basically though cannot see any really good reason to criticize the Duck
Stamp program. Not perfect(what is) but a hek of alot better and more
productive than many of the alternatives out there
Our Natl Wild Refuges are hurting and hurting big time right now! There has
been a huge cut in funding with many areas working with less than skeleton
crews.I cant think of a better time or more urgent time to go out and buy Duck
Stamps!!!!!
The ducks thank you but so do the ibis, rail, yellowlegs, prothonotory
warbler.otter........
