Milton would have disagreed. In fact the doctrine of the Trinity has
never ceased to be a source of (often very bloody) controversy among
Christians. One 'advantage' of the doctrine was that through its bizarre
complexisty it guaranteed the division of Christian churches into a
(priestly) bureaucracy on the one hand and passive believers on the
other. That political advantage probably is what brought about its
victory in Constantine Christianity.
