Dear CR: Exactly right. Their marriage must have had some good moments -- she did help edit TWL so he did trust her taste and judgement, for one thing. The TSE bios contain some shocking accounts of her behavior at Eliot's readings before she was hospitalized. Several reports say she carried a knife in her purse -- in one it is a rubber stage prop. In any case she was institutionalized with the full cooperation of her family - her brother and Eliot remained friends and were in touch over the years. You are probably familiar with these events. He must have had a torrent of mixed emotions at her death. What a terrible love affair they had! Diana

I wonder if it's simple to explain why he cried in the first place,

and what complex of emotions he passed through at the news.

Considering the circumstances, it's hardly a surprise that he may have had more than one reaction to the news of Vivian's death.  His initial reaction may have well been of tears and sorrow.  Later on, the guilt and memories kicking in, he may have acted a bit more cavalier, to friends and the world at large.

Well it's no use pretending that Eliot was your average bear. What genius is or was? Diana

It's unfortunate that this blame game erupts,

like a volcano, every now and then. Well,

a nice thing about standards, it's said, is that

there are so many of them to choose from.

Cheers!
