Hi there, I've been lurking on this list for almost a year now. I met a Columbia ASM member named Ann Downing in a parking lot on 5th and Broadway tonight - we were both staring at a very large number of Purple Martins circling to roost on a Bradford pear tree in the Commerce Bank parking lot. I'm posting this on her behalf (and my own, I guess!) - she mentioned that earlier this summer, the same tree was a steady roost for loads of Brown-headed Cowbirds. I did not see any cowbirds in the tree this evening; Ann mentioned seeing a few females/juveniles. It really is an enormous crowd of Martins (but I'm from the east coast - maybe this is normal for you guys?). They seem to start circling in around 8:15 and have all landed by 9:00pm.
