Below is my list from a pelagic trip in Monterry Bay September 14, 1996. I
also took two Monterry trips in early September, 1988 and two in early
October, 1991. The collective list from all five trips is considerably
larger than the list below, in part because I was fortunate to get a number
of southern pelagics, like Least Storm-petrel and Craveri's and Xantus'
Murrelets, in El Nino years, in part because there are different habitats at
sea, and the boat gets different birds when it visits different locations,
and in part because every pelagic trip is different. Nevetheless, the list
below is fairly representative of what you can expect on a single
mid-September trip in Monterrey Bay in a cold water year. (Obviously, we saw
a few birds, like Anna's Hummingbird and Pied-billed Grebe, after reaching
shore).
