FACTS...

Note the channels that your manual classifies as GMRS... These cannot be
used w/o a license...

Like many folks, I HAVE used them even though I do NOT have a license... (I
hear sirens outside my door now...)

The channels classified as FRS by your manual can be used w/o a license...

Difference between the two types...

GMRS broadcasts at a full watt.

FRS broadcasts at 1/2 watt.

The standard birding channel, 11/22 (channel 11 / sub channel 22) is NOT FRS
and can be used w/o a license...

**Note: Some states are using other channels for birding. It would be
beneficial to know what the "standard" is regarding the channel/sub channel
setting for the given state in which you are birding...

**!!** Gerald White, Iowa birder, may provide additional information on this
thread. He is very knowledgeable and his information would go far towards
fleshing out the details of this issue.

A great idea!. After reading some chat on MoBirds, I bought a Motorola
T5000 2-way radio, thinking I could use certain of its channels without a
license. It sits unused and dusty on my dresser because after reading the
instructions, I still wasn't sure if I had to be licensed to use it.
This may seem trivial to many, but I am electronically/mechanically
challenged, and have difficulty translating instructions for all sorts of
things into easy use.
