Sorry, my little finger slipped on the keyboard. It was the Thursday, 20 April 2006 trip.

With reasonably high expectations, we began at Tower Grove Park in the City of St Louis. The birds seen and heard Wednesday had disappeared overnight. No Blue Wing, no Worm-eating, no Rose-breasted Grosbeak that we saw. There were Orange Crowns, one of the Waterthrushes and, to save the morning, all 5 Great Horned Owls for the birders to enjoy again. Plus Brown Thrasher, Gray Catbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers and plenty of White-throated Sparrows. At the east end near Jack Van's Pond, Jean found two female Purple Finches scrounging in the almost dry ditch.
In Illinois, the afternoon crowd saw the Cinnamon Teal (spotted by Rose Ann Bodman and Dick Coles) at Eagle Park Rd, but couldn't find the Am Bittern at the boat launch off 111. Coots, a few mallards and Gadwall were hanging around. At Indian Lake (the old Collinsville Rd golf course) there were a number of Little Blue Herons, Eastern Kingbird, Green Heron, Am Kestrel, two Wild Turkeys which quickly disappeared into the tall grasses, Chimney Swifts, Purple Martins, both Yellowlegs species, Killdeer.

Near the entrance to the Cahokia Mounds Museum on Collinsville Road, we saw our First of Year Cattle Egrets (though reported earlier by others?) and First of Year Snowy Egret in the only pond remaining by the museum (the others ponds were dried up).

So, a mixed day in weather..cool and cloudy in the morning, warm in the afternoon..and birds.
