Went down to Simpson County Park in Valley Park,St Louis Co this evening in
hopes of seeing a returning Yellow-crowned-Heron.Its the only place in the
west St Louis County where this bird occurs on an a semi-annual basis(been
there at least 4 of the last 7 years anyway)
No yellow-crowns tonight but there were a few black-crowns,great
egrets, green herons,Little Blues and great blue herons located along the lake edge.
Highlight was an OSPREY perched on a tree along the eastern shoreline!
Simpson Co park is a small park sandwiched between the Meremac River and
Simpson lake and located along Marshall rd in Valley Park which one can get to
from 141.
Although its small in size its big in bird diversity. its another really
good area to see prothonotory warbler.(Castlewood SP is only about 4 miles
upriver from Simpson Park)
  other birds seen-
Baltomore Orioles-2 males males chasing each other in the cottonwoods right
next to the entrance
 Eastern Kingbirds

parula,yellow-throated,blue-wing ,prothonotory warblers
warbling vireo
gnatcatchers
 Pied Bill grebes,Ruddy ducks
rough-wing,barn,tree swallows

besides a good spot for yellow-crown heron it also usually hosts a few pairs
of nesting mississippi kites in the summer and during the winter its often
easy to find several Bald Eagles in the trees along the lake edge
