Today, Thursday, we had excellent views of the GLAUCOUS GULL at Smithville
Lake, both setting on the water (viewed from the boat launching area)
and later setting on the roof of the marina.

Additional sightings at the lake area included Hooded Mergansers, Common
Goldeneyes, Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Mallards, Ring-billed Gulls, Gadwall,
14 Wild Turkeys, American Crows, Red-tailed Hawks, Bald Eagles,
Loggerhead Shrike, Red-headed Woodpecker, Northern Mockingbird,
Downy Wooodpecker, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Tree Sparrows and Juncos.

AND upon leaving the marina parking lot, between the north side
of the boat slips and the highway near (but not among) a few Mallards and
Canada Geese, was one lonely PIED-BILLED GREBE (is this early?).

On to McComas road where we enjoyed close excellent views of
9 to 10 Northern Harriers and 7 to 8 Short-eared Owls. Both the Harriers
and the Owls posed for us on fence posts at times, in addition to
showing off their flying antics.
Perched like a Christmas ornament in one of the A.Cedar trees, in late but
bright sunlight was the second N. Mockingbird of the day. Meadow Larks (not
singing) and Tree Sparrows...plus one White-tailed deer completed the scene.

A cold, but beautiful, beautiful day...

P.S. a late post but may be of interest: at Squaw Creek NWR on Monday Feb. 6
one Bald Eagle was setting, very hunkered down on the largest nest
after turning onto the road to Mallard Marsh.
