MoBirders,

After getting up very late this morning, Ellen and I finally got organized enough to head out for our annual New Year's Day bird outing. Limiting ourselves to a 10-mile radius of our house, we covered Lake Jacomo as well as Burr Oak Woods for a total count of 37 species. The weather was beautiful. The temperature almost too warm. But in spite of all, we ended up with what we thought were some pretty good January 1st birds.

  Notable birds are as follows:

    Lake Jacomo:
    Greater Scaup, 100+
  Hooded Merganser, 1
  Red-breasted Nuthatch, 2
  Brown Creeper, 3
Bald Eagle, 1, causeway between Lake Jacomo & Blue Springs Lake
  Cooper's Hawk, 1

Burr Oak Woods - Strode Road:
    LeConte's Sparrow, 3
  Swamp Sparrow, numerous
  Marsh Wren, 2
  Wood Duck, 5
  Northern Mockingbird, 1
All in all it was enjoyable being outdoors on this pleasant January day.
