Women, Health, and Medicine
Pre-20th-Century Panel for the Women in German Annual Conference,
2006. October 19-22, 2006 at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort,
Utah (near Salt Lake City).
Session Organizers:
… Lisabeth Hock, Wayne State University ([log in to unmask])
and
… Tracie Matysik, University of Texas
([log in to unmask]).
We are seeking proposals for 20-minute presentations
that discuss intersections between representations of women and
discourses of health, illness, and medicine from the Middle Ages
through the end of the nineteenth century. Questions that papers might
address include:
… How is the spiritual, physical, or mental health of women
represented?
… How is spiritual, physical, or mental illness represented?
… To what extent do these representations engage with such
discourses as: humoral medicine, homeopathy, romantic medicine, herbal
medicine, clinical medicine, psychiatry, gynecology, or midwifery?
While papers should relate to some aspect of German studies,
interdisciplinary approaches and contributions from scholars in all
disciplines (including, but not limited to, literary and cultural
studies, women's studies, history, art history, biology, medicine, and
sociology) are encouraged.
Accepted presenters must be members of Women in German by June 1,
2005. Membership information is available at
http://www.womeningerman.org.
Please submit 300-500 word abstracts, together with your c.v.,
electronically to both organizers by March 15, 2006.
