Cambio de Colores 2007 Call for Abstracts

Cambio de Colores (Change of Colors) 2007 Conference
Latinos in Missouri: Everyone Together / Todos juntos

www.cambiodecolores.org

April 2-4, 2007
Marriott Country Club Plaza
Kansas City, Missouri

Deadline for submitting abstracts is December 5th, 2006

Cambio de Colores is an annual conference that, since 2002, brings together researchers, practitioners, and community members to discuss the issues that Missouri and other Heartland states face as a result of demographic changes reflected in the 2000 Census. Missouri experienced changes in almost every county during the past decade.

Cambio de Colores is a collaborative effort of the University  of Missouri campuses and Extension, other educational institutions in the state, as well as government and private organizations. It brings together researchers with those working in Latino/a growth regions to address critical needs and promote networks so that available knowledge, resources, and capabilities can be accessible to Missouri’s communities and organizations.

Cambio de Colores always benefits from the contributions of policy makers, practitioners, and academics from various states, especially from the Midwest, who share similar experiences.

The 2007 program motto—Everyone Together / Todos juntos—underlines the need for every stakeholder—regardless of ethnicity or origin—to be involved in the process of integrating  newcomers in the receiving communities. Everyone together can make this process smooth and proactive while promoting the well-being of all residents.  This requires knowledge, from the very basic to the most applied, as the landscape of our communities changes colors.

The 2007 conference will have a bi-state flavor as metropolitan Kansas City is included in both Missouri and Kansas.  Kansas City is home to Missouri’s largest and longest established Hispanic/Latino communities.  Kansas City is unique in that its greater metropolitan area spans five counties across the Missouri-Kansas state lines, and it is home to many Hispanic/Latino serving agencies that have operated for many decades. This year’s conference will showcase some of these agencies so that participants may learn their history, their successes and challenges, as well as their approaches to accommodating the needs of Hispanic/Latino newcomers in their communities.
