The Biloxi Miss newspaper, the Sun-Herald ,carries weekly articles
written by Judith Toups, renown Miss birder. Since Katrina the paper has not
been charging for access so I have been following the news of the hurricane
devastation on birds from her articles. Since all shrubs and trees are
pretty much wiped out there is no place for the birds to feed or roost.
They are trying to restore some neighborhood sites. It all sounds so
terrible. Brown Pelican numbers are greatly reduced.

In her Sun article she included a site of much interest to all b irders.
Scott Weidensaul had written an article in NY Times, Nov 30 about the H5N1
strain of avian flu. Can be accessed by

www.mscoastaudubon.org/weidensaul.html

Donald suggested the other day that I put sweet gum tree balls under the
sunflower feeders to repel the squirrels from doing the usual --driving away
the birds and hogging all the seeds. So far no squirrels and the birds can
work around the balls.
Will keep you posted.
