Went to Thousand Hills State Park today (12/1) to check the pine grove where Long-eared Owls have been seen by others in past years. Did not see any today... I did have a few Golden-crowned Kinglets, some chickadees and some titmice, and a few Red-Bellied Woodpeckers. I also had a good candidate for a Northern Goshawk, but the look I got was not good enough to say for sure. I could not check the lake for waterfowl because the gates to the road were closed (I presume because the roads were pretty slick). Afterwards I went to a field on Highway P outside of Kirksville to look for Short-eared Owls. I had one off in the distance about 20 minutes before sunset, and waited around for a while hoping for a better look. Right as I was about to head home, one flew about thirty feet in front of me. Neat birds.
