C.R. Mittal sent us an email with a few lines of Eliot quoted:

On page 54 of "The Letters of T.S. Eliot" Valeriue Eliot has in a footnote:
   [Eliot's brother Henry] suffered deafness owing to scarlet fever as a
   child ...  It was with his brother in mind that TSE wrote: 'The notion
   of some infinitely gentle / Infinitely suffering thing.' ('Preludes' IV)
