Hi,

Sue and I also have a Prius. I agree with Diane that it makes a fine 
birding vehicle. When stopped or moving at less than 15 mph it's silent. 
One design goal was certainly high mileage, but an even higher priority was 
given to low emissions. It outputs about a tenth the pollutants of a 
typical compact car -- another benefit to our feathered friends.

BTW, the Tree Swallows are gathering on phone lines here (along with cliff 
swallows and others). Seems a bit early.
