I had the good fortune to observe one BLACK RAIL at Bean Lake, Platte County, MO. at appx. 3pm. today. The temperature had dropped to 68 degrees with storms rolling through the area. There are quite a few shorebirds at the north end of the pool that the Tricolored Heron had frequented (although I did not see it today). While picking through these birds, the Black Rail came out of the vegetation 3 times, reaching the water's edge on the third try. I never thought I'd get looks like that at a Black Rail!
This pool is located on the north side of S. Shore Rd/River Rd., at the southern tip of Bean Lake. The roads are labeled on page 26 of the Delorme Atlas.
Good Birding,
Doug Willis
Kansas City, MO
