BDR may have originated in the St. Louis area, too. I first heard it
from the lips of Torrey Berger as he described how he got from home to a
site on a route that took considerably more time than a straight line
should. I heard it from Charlene Malone not too long after that, so I
don't know if one of them coined it or heard it from yet
another--perhaps one of them will enlighten us.

I've set a personal limit to a legit BDR as less than 1,000 miles beyond
the straight line mileage (that's a one-way limit, not round trip, of
course, so the trip Susan described [what crazy people would do that?]
is a legit BDR--with this limitation it is still possible to go to The
Valley when headed toward AZ or CA and not think of it as going out of
one's way.

The Valley = The (lower) Rio Grande Valley of south Texas.
