The catch-all term "peeps" is used to describe small shorebirds of the genus Calidris (Least, Semipalmated, Western, Baird's, White-Rumped Sandpipers) that can be difficult to identify in the field. Distance, heat shimmer, similar shapes and plumages, and lack of knowledge all conspire to cause many birders (mostly myself!) to list these birds as "peeps," rather than go through the mentally taxing process of identification to species. 100 degree temps and skeeters don't help, either! Doug Willis Kansas City, MO P.S. I'm not sure, but I think the term "peep" is a loose translation of Calidris Sandpiper vocalizations. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Seyboth" <[log in to unmask]> To: <[log in to unmask]> Sent: Sunday, August 07, 2005 1:16 PM Subject: Bird Slang > I've been seeing reports of "Peeps".
