With regard to paying a fee for accessing Little Platte Rec. Area, Crows
Creek Campground area, or Camp Branch Marina, I have birded these areas
during this period and told the "collector" that I was driving through to
look at birds with binocs and scope... He (different guy in two different
cases) let me go w/o paying...

BUT... Maybe they are cracking down more??

FYI...

Subject: Smithville Lake 8-3-05

Checked one of my favorite "patches" today. Scoped the Honker Cove area of
Smithville Lake, north of the Hwy W bridge, Clinton County, MO. (accessed
east of Trimble, MO).
Highlights:
Caspian Tern-5
Forster's Tern-8
Black Tern-2
Osprey-2
Ring-Billed Gull-14
Double-Crested Cormorant-2
Spotted Sandpiper-2 (perched on snags out in the lake) Solitary Sandpiper-1
(working the shoreline) Great Horned Owl-1 (perched on a telephone pole in
broad
     daylight!)
I was serenaded by a Northern Mockingbird at the parking lot, who included
splendid imitations of White-Breasted Nuthatch, Catbird and Brown Thrasher
in his performance.
Surprisingly, there weren't many boats out on the main body of the lake (by
the dam)...not many birds, either. Tomorrow might be better...
Good Birding,

P.S. To access Little Platte Rec. Area, Crows Creek Campground area, or Camp
Branch Marina, a daily fee (or camping fee) must be paid this time of year.
Any of the picnic areas (there is one at Crows Creek) or gravel access roads
(mainly north of Hwy. W bridge) can be accessed free of charge. Of course,
an annual pass (about $20.00) can be purchased (and Clay County Parks is
doing quite a bit of prarie restoration around the lake).
