>Topic: Melting Pot Vienna: Then and Now
>Time: July 10-August 5
>Location: Diplomatic Academy, Vienna, Austria
>Directors: Maria-Regina Kecht, Rice University and Helga
>Schreckenberger, University of Vermont
>Language of Seminar Discussions/Readings: German
>
>It is our intention to look at Vienna as a 'case study' illustrating
>the tremendous contribution immigrants have made to modern European
>societies. The complexity of a city-derived from the multi-ethnic,
>socio-economic, and political-ideological diversity of its
>population- provides an ideal topic for a NEH Institute.
>Understanding the diverse population of Vienna and the urban culture
>created through the last century will allow participants in our
>Institute to reorient their intellectual perceptions. Through a
>carefully arranged combination of powerful readings (fiction and
>non-fiction) and film or video viewings, scholarly presentations by
>Austrian experts on questions of migration and multi-ethnicity, as
>well as site visits to historically important, topically relevant
>Viennese facilities, we will offer participants the opportunity to
>develop fresh insights into an academically as well as socially
>exciting topic.
>
>We are inviting colleagues in German Studies-from various
>disciplines (history, social sciences, music, philosophy,
>literature, etc.)-and interested in expanding their knowledge about
>Austrian matters to apply for this NEH-sponsored opportunity of
>professional development. Advanced German proficiency a must.
