Survey teams participated in the B. K. Leach Memorial C. A. marsh bird
monitoring program Sat Jun 4. Birds observed included the following. All
observations made between 7 and 8:30 p.m. in the Bittern Basin Unit (BBU),
the new MDC marsh management area that sits along highway P, east of
Missouri highway 79, north of Elsberry, Missouri (Lincoln County).

The best I can do right now for directions is: look at a MDC map of B. K.
Leach Mem. C. A. It will show the BBU, the outline of which looks roughly
like the state of Illinois.

SANDHILL CRANE -- The crane landed near the northeast corner of pool 2. On
the map you'll see a large indentation in the BBU boundary, between the
north and south parking lots. The bird landed about 300 yards to the west
of the southwest corner of the indentation.

Also observed were 2 KING RAIL and 1 SORA, just to the north of the south
parking lot and very close to highway P. 1, possibly 2, AMERICAN BITTERN
were seen in the southwest corner of the BBU, roughly 1/2 mile to the west,
and a little north of, the south parking lot. 1 COMMON NIGHTHAWK was a
fly-by this evening.
