Spent the afternoon studying shorebirds at Squaw Creek NWR, Holt County, MO. Excellent habitat is appearing at the Mallard Marsh unit, near the north entrance to the refuge. Exposed shoreline exists at the Snow Goose Pool complex and perhaps the best observable mudflat is on the east side of the refuge, near the pumphouse. Highlights:
Franklin's Gull-300+(following a disking tractor, between the
     refuge and I-29)
HUDSONIAN GODWIT-5 (2 located in the NW corner of
Mallard Marsh and 3 observed near the pumphouse)
White-Rumped Sandpiper-6 (near the pumphouse)
Short-Billed Dowitcher-15(vocalizing upon takeoff and
     landing near the pumphouse)
Long-Billed Dowitcher-30(vocalizing upon takeoff and land-
     ing, Mallard Marsh)
Dowitcher, Sp-35
Baird's Sandpiper-175 (near the pumphouse)
Semipalmated Plover-100 (near the pumphouse)
Wilson's Phalarope-12 (Mallard Marsh)
Other shorebird species seen on the refuge: Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Dunlin, Willet, Killdeer.
14 Dark Ibis' observed just east of Snow Goose pool (same location as before) Only identified 5 to species, White-Faced Ibis; they were feeding and resting deep in the vegetation.
Cattle Egret-1 (in the freshly plowed field east of the pump-
     house)
Those rascally Peregrine's sure make it hard to study shorebirds!!

Bob Brown CA, Holt County, MO (Sunset):
Black-Crowned Night Heron-25
American Bittern-1
Flyover Herons, Sora's, Marsh Wrens, Blue-Winged Teal, Greater Yellowlegs, Red-Winged Blackbirds, and a high density of Yellow Headed Blackbirds combined for an interesting sunset chorus.
Good Birding,
Doug Willis
Kansas City, MO
