This morning six of us started at Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, went to
the Cedar Creek trail off of Route AB (Mark Twain National Forest), then to
Baskett Research Area off of Route Y, onto the Pine Ridge Campground off of
Route Y, a quick lunch, then down to Eagle Bluffs --- using the "spot and
split" technique learned at the ASM Springfield meeting! In total we
observed about 94 species. Highlights included 14 warbler species, 10
shorebird species and 8 Forster's Terns lined up on a log in the
distribution channel at Eagle Bluffs.

The US Forest service land off of Route AB is rarely reported on this
listserve. We were delighted to see two Ovenbirds within 100 yards of the
parking lot, more Towhees than we could count, and great looks at Black and
White, Prairie, Blue-winged, and Black-throated Green Warblers. Other
warbler species were not quite so cooperative! A Broad-winged Hawk circled
overhead with a Turkey Vulture.

Bobolinks and Dicksissels have finally arrived at EBCA - for the bobolinks
look in the small alfalfa field that is just past the small grove of trees
after you make the last turn into Eagle Bluffs itself (right-south side of
the road). Seemed to be a turnover in birds at EBCA - the pelican flock is
greatly reduced, could not locate the phalaropes or dunlin, most of the
shorebirds were back in the Pool 15, and few were in Pool 4. More
semipalmated plovers, white-rumped and baird's sandpipers than previously
seen.

First of the year catbird and wood thrush at Rock Bridge. Great day to be
out.
