Thanks to Connie Alwood and John Solodar for leading the St. Louis Audubon
Society field trip today, Sat Apr 30, to Shaw Nature Reserve in Franklin
County.  There were quite a number of good birds seen in the morning.  Hope
Connie or John will post the trip list.

The group was wrapping up about 11:30, so I parted company and headed for
the river, birding solo the rest of the day.

Highlights included...

BRUSH CREEK TRAIL / PRAIRIE

01 Northern Bobwhite
01 Wood Duck

RIVER TRAIL

01 Wild Turkey (in the deep woods, flying up to a tree)
02 Prothonotary Warbler, singing
02 Yellow-throated Warbler, singing
01 Ruby-throated Hummingbird, F

The Meramec River was high, and the small footbridge near river's edge was
washed out.

01 Wild Turkey, on the gravel bar
xx Northern Parula, several singing
xx Red-eyed Vireo, common
01 Kentucky Warbler, singing
02 SCARLET TANAGER, each singing
01 BLUE GROSBEAK, M
01 Green Heron
01 Belted Kingfisher
01 Red-tailed Hawk, adult carrying snake over the river
xx several unidentified hawks at distance, kiting and soaring
01 CERULEAN WARBLER, singing
02 SUMMER TANAGER, calling and singing

WETLANDS COMPLEX

02 Red-tailed Hawks, adults soaring at close range over prairie
01 Eastern Kingbird
01 Sharp-shinned Hawk
02 Red-shouldered Hawk
01 Belted Kingfisher
01 Great-crested Flycatcher
07 Canada Goose (2 adults + 5 goslings)
01 Cooper's Hawk

PINETUM

03 Yellow-rumped Warbler

It was reported to me that owlets (sp?) were seen in a tree just a short
distance to the south of the point where the two sections of the serpentine
wall join.
