For those not interested in another MN birding trip report, delete now. Otherwise, Chris Brown and I spent this past Friday through Sunday in Northeastern, MN--Great trip, very cold and here are the highlights of the trip--only 30 species total observed:

30-Great Gray Owls
3-Northern Hawk Owl
4-Sharp Tailed Grouse
1-Pileated Woodpecker
3-Gray Jay
37-Common Redpoll

Friday, January 14-Itasca Co:
2-Northern Hawk Owl

Friday, January 14-St. Louis Co. (Sax-Zim Bog):
2-Adult Bald Eagle
1-Great Gray Owl
2-Gray Jay
5-Common Redpoll
3-Pine Grosbeak

Saturday, January 15-St. Louis Co. (Sax-Zim Bog):
8-Great Gray Owl
10-Northern Hawk Owl
27-Snow Buntings
1-Adult Bald Eagle
5-Sharp Tailed Grouse
1-Gray Jay

3-Boreal Chickadees

Saturday, January 15-Lake Co. (Two-Harbors):
1-Boreal Owl
11-Great Gray Owls: These birds were all flying north along the shoreline at dusk. Very cool to observe this behavior. According to Jim Lind (of MN) this type of behavior, similar to hawks, has never been observed in any previous invasion year by Great Gray Owls.. He also told us that as many as 300 Great Gray Owls have already been found dead as a result of starvation or automobile collisions. So although very exciting to get to see the invasion--lets hope these owls are going to pull through this...

Sunday, January 16-Lake Co:
2-Boreal Chickadees: Hwy 1-near mile marker 301
1-Ruffed Grouse: Along Hwy 2
2-Great Gray Owl: Both seen off of Hwy 61
1-Northern Hawk Owl: observed off of Hwy 61

Sunday, January 16-Lake Co (Isabella feeders-across from Moose Ridge Cafe):
20+ Pine Grosbeaks
1-Pine Siskin
1-Red Breasted Nuthatch
10-Common Redpoll

Sunday, January 16-Lake Co. (Two Harbors):
~100 Bohemian Waxwings; perched in a tree off of 7th street just south of 20th street.
2-Harlequin Ducks; near breakwater in Agate Bay.
2-Boreal Owls; birds were about 10 yards apart from one another
Many Common Redpolls at the various feeders around town, we never could come up with a Hoary. Guess we will have to go back next year!

Thanks Minnesota!!
