In my opinion the refuge has started downhill on a slippery slope and it
is difficult to stop once started. First the refuge started allowing deer
hunting
one week-end yearly. I have no objection to that.

Because of concern about overpopulation of the Snow Geese and their impact
on the tundra, Congress approved hunting of Snow geese on the refuge
starting in late
January 2006 until late April, seven days weekly for half day hunts on the
northeast 200 acre corner of the refuge. One guide will manage the
hunting and pay fees to the refuge in return.

Obviously this does not sound like much of an opportunity for a goose
hunter. Most of the snow geese leave the refuge voluntarily before dawn
or thereafter to visit the local cornfields anyway and will not be present
on the refuge for the hunting. The sound of local gunfire on the refuge
will most likely flush all the ducks off the refuge onto local hunting
properties. The "refuge" has lost it's purpose if this happens.

Previous reports stated that snow geese failed to nest this year because
of high winds, ice and snow storms during the month of June on the tundra.

In comparison to size of other refuges which allow hunting of waterfowl,
Squaw Creek NWR is very small. Bird watchers may be threatened one day
with having the refuge closed to them because of hunting season just as it
is
this weekend for hunting deer at SCNWR.

Your comments on this proposed hunt should be sent before Jan. 21, 2005 to:
