Reassessing GDR Literature and Film

After the fall of the GDR (German Democratic Republic), its literature
and cinema underwent an extended process of rediscovery and
reevaluation. This corpus of works, fascinating both aesthetically and
historically, spurred partly by political revelations, the opening of
previously sealed archives, and the belated release/publication of
banned works, has interested many scholars in Germany and abroad. What
is the relevance of these texts today? What do they tell us about the
GDR? How should GDR literature and film be defined, given several
generations of émigrés? Authors managed to write, filmmakers to
direct, despite state censorship. How did they reconcile the resulting
compromises with their own aesthetic vision? How did politics
contaminate or inspire their works? How have post-Wende revelations
and the opening of secret archives changed our sense of these works?
What can we now conclude about audiences, reception and spectatorship
in the GDR? What are the overlaps between GDR literary and film
history? What factors have informed the canon that is conventionally
labeled East German? What authors, what films have been neglected by
scholarship, and for what reasons?
We welcome submissions that explore GDR cultural productions and the
literature and films produced despite and/or because of state
censorship. Some suggestions for topics include:

East German Cultural Identity
Strategies of Censorship and Subversive Counter-Strategies
Legacies of Stalinism: The Cult of Personality and its Discontents
State Cultural Institutions and Aesthetic Mandates (Bitterfelder Weg,
etc.)
Status of Women and Gender Issues
Alternative, Youth and Counter-Culture
Erbediskussion (incl. Reception of Weimar, Third Reich and Émigré
Traditions)
Rethinking Socialist Realism
