This is the Thursday, December 9, 2004 Missouri Bird Alert, a statewide
service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the birding
community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from
reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout the state.

A non-breeding adult CALIFORNIA GULL, first discovered in the gull
roost in Ellis Bay at Riverlands Environmental Demonstration Area
(REDA) (St. Charles Co.) by Charlene and Jim Malone on Dec. 2, was
still present on Thursday, Dec. 9. The gull roost usually begins to
form in the evening (3:30 or later) across from Heron Pond in Ellis Bay.

Several birders searched unsuccessfully for the immature BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE (first reported on Nov. 27) at the Bagnell Dam of Lake of the
Ozarks on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The last positive report of this bird was
by J Pat Valentik Sunday, Dec. 5.

An immature PRAIRIE FALCON was seen by Kristi Mayo near the south end
of Sunshine Lake (Ray Co.) on Sunday, Dec. 5. It was last seen flying
to the west.

RED CROSSBILLS continue to be seen sporadically on both sides of the
state. Joe Eades had one flyover RED CROSSBILL at the Fallen Oak Nature
Trail, August Busch CA (St. Charles Co.) on Sunday, Dec. 5. Also on
Sunday, Kristi Mayo had 10 RED CROSSBILLS fly overhead at Watkins Mill
SP (Clay Co.).

SNOW BUNTINGS continue to be seen at the Camp Branch Marina parking lot
at Smithville Lake (Clay Co.). Three were seen by Jo Ann and Bob
Eldridge on Sunday, Dec. 5.

At least one RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues to visit the feeders at Bill
Eddleman’s Cape Girardeau residence. Those interested in seeing the
bird may call 573-335-1507.
