There were fairly low numbers of ducks and gulls on Smithville Lake
this evening. Maybe 200 gulls in the gull roost (mainly Ring-billed
with a handful of Herring & Bonaparte's mixed in--I didn't stay until
dark) and only a couple hundred ducks (the expected early-winter mix of
Common & Red-breasted Merganser, Common Goldeneye, scaup sp., Mallard,
and some N. Shovelers). There was, however, among a mixed flock of
goldeneye and scaup, one adult female LONG-TAILED DUCK. Also one or two
Horned Grebes hanging in there.

All of these birds in the center of the main body of the lake, viewed
from the north end of the dam.
