QUICK trip to Riverlands EDA, St. Charles co, 7/3/04
Extensive mudflats, so LOTS of habitat to search through. Make sure to stop
at West Alton Boat ramp/River Access and "Stonehenge" (end of the Linc.
Shields slough along Highway 67 is a stone lined parking lot, as one goes
back toward St. Louis)
Heron Pond is higher than ever.

Shorebirds:
KILLDEER - LARGE increase in numbers there. High hundreds ++. Counted 65
next to Ellis island without really trying.
4 LEAST SANDPIPERS - Ellis Bay between Heron Pond and Observation tower.
6 Spotted sps
Imagine shorebirds are on the move.
CURLEW SP or RUFF anyone?? ;-)

Others:
2 LEAST TERNS
3 imm. HOODED MERGs - Heron pond
one GADWALL
2 male CANVASBACKS - Bert & Ernie have not moved from this island in a
while. Hope they are OK.
one somewhat ratty looking adult BALD EAGLE
several C. Geese holding up traffic along Hwy 67. They were lucky not to get
creamed.
SEDGE WRENS singing away
one singing BLUE GROSBEAK - heard in Linc. Shields area. NEW for me in this
location.

Happy holidays,
Charlene Malone
St. Louis co.
