Molly Ivins column also ran in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this a.m. Alleged that an Alabaman who is a candidate (or already selected ) for a judgeship formerly was in a position to advocate on behalf of bombing runs, I believe in the Marianas. He's alleged to have said that the rarer the bird, the more interesting to birders, (so making birds rare was a good thing). He might have been joking. Or this might have been an April Fool's joke on Ivins' part. However, I recall a President who said of trees something like "If you've seen one, you've seen them all", and I think it's not impossible that the remark Ivins quoted about birders might actually have been said by someone who really doesn't give a darn about any species other than us.
