Starting at 4:30AM today, March 28th, Jim Malone and I took a shot at a March Big Day--And what a Great Day it was despite the few rain drops---It included many "first of year" birds and some good winter birds were still found to be lingering.  The day ended with a grand total of 116 species observed/heard!!  Here are some of the highlights:

REDA:
1-AMERICAN BITTERN, first seen in flight and than landed at far end of Pintail Marsh
1-OSPREY, Lincoln Shields side, perched in tree
1-BARN SWALLOW, Pintail Marsh
1-Great Egret, In slough observed from hwy 367-Lincoln Shields side
1-Peregrine Falcon, a top the Clark Bridge Tower (NO-this bird is not in the 116 total)
3+:  Greater Scaup in Ellis Bay

BUSCH CA:
1-LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, perched on right side of Weldon Springs Trail at top of first hill from parking lot
1-male SPOTTED TOWHEE, Lake 21
4+:Purple Finch, Fallen Oak Nature Trail
2-Harris Sparrow's-Weldon Springs Trail

Near Washington, MO:
1-ROSS'S GOOSE
1-OSPREY

Rockwoods Res.:
1-BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER

Castlewood SP:
1-YELLOW THROATED WARBLER
1-NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED SWALLOW


Other birds of note observed: Red Breasted Nuthatch, Pine Warblers at 3 different locations, 7+ Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers, Winter Wren, Rusty Blackbirds, at least 1 Vesper Sparrow and 7 species of shorebirds.
