Michael Jeffords of the Illinois Natural History Survey will lecture and
give a slide presentation on hill prairies at 7 p.m. March 18 (tonight) at
The Nature Institute’s Talahi Lodge, 2213 S. Levis Lane, Godfrey, Ill. (St.
Louis, Mo., area)
The program, “Hill Prairies of Illinois,” will focus on the patches of
prairie vegetation that typically occurs on steep, south-facing bluffs along
the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. It will identify the characteristics of
hill prairies and their origin in the Illinois landscape.
Jeffords is a senior professional scientist at the Illinois Natural History
Survey and Associate Professor at the University of Illinois. He is an
entomologist, freelance photographer and writer and has co-authored a coffee
table book on natural habitats of Illinois called “Illinois Wilds.”
The program, provided through The Nature Institute, is free and open to the
public. Anyone wanting more information about the program or The Nature
Institute should call 466-9930.

Sorry I'm posting this so late. For anyone who can make it, it should be
interesting. I don't know how much Jeffords will speak about grassland birds
and which species can be found in hill prairies. The discussion of this
unique and diminishing habitat should be interesting to most birders I know.
