Don't know if any of the St. Louis area birders have noticed, but when one drives past the Alton Belle Casino in Alton, IL, one will hear VERY loud Peregrine Falcon calls emanating from somewhere in the vicinity of the
casino.
Stopped to scope out the situation and noticed speakers mounted on the roof that routinely plays these vocalizations. I am assuming that is to try to get rid of the many Rock Pigeons roosting on and defacing the establishment's finely decorated exterior. Along with a couple of plastic owls, these scare tactics are not phasing the pigeons one bit. The ROPIs are quite at home and happy to add to the decor of this building, um, er, gambling boat.

THING IS........
I have not seen the REAL Peregrines on the Bridge (only a stone's throw from the casino) but once in the last several weeks.
Is this constant playing of this tape scaring off the REAL Peregrines??... Maybe making these birds think there is a much larger and bigger threat occupying this territory, so the real birds left??
Is this harassment of an endangered/threatened species?

Just wondering.

Somewhat ironic if they scared away the very birds that could reduce the Rock pigeon population.

Charlene Malone
