Thanks, Carrol! I used to be a big fan of Bloom's... then I read 'The
Western Canon'... :-)
I too did send some of my poems to Bloom -- *by email*! He wrote back asking
whether I was a relative of his friend Trevisan living in Venice... I told
him that if I owned a cent for each Trevisan in this county, I'd be a
millionaire. Of course, he didn't enjoy my poetry. But he also never enjoyed
John Irving's novels -- it might well be a good thing! :-)
We have a professor here who's knows for such... *friendliness* towards
students. It's been like this for twenty years -- just, all the girls hear
about this through the grapevine in advance, and always go to his office
hours in groups of four or five...
What struck me is that they had email service in Yale in 1983! Here we had
Basic programmes with black and green screens. No, I think we still had
those papers with holes you had to put in the correct order in a row, in
order to have your data inserted into the calculator...
