Below is an schedule of events for the Schell Osage Birding Spree. And, below the event schedule is information to help you register for the event.


Everyone is welcome to attend all or any part of the February 20-21, 2004 events at Schell Osage. Registration is required for a seat in a duck blind with an experienced duck hunter because there are only 40 seats available. Registration is required for Friday dinner and presentations because there are only 70 seats available in the dinning facility.

Registrations is already half full, so, sign up soon for meals and the duck blinds.

Friday, February 20, 2004

2:30 p.m.       Field trip: northern harriers, short-eared owls, greater prairie-chickens
                             (booming grounds displays) and American woodcocks (evening courtship flights).

6:30 p.m.       Mixer at El Dorado Springs/Nevada

7:00 p.m.       Dinner (bird photos showing during meal)

7:45 p.m.       Evening Program (presentation 20 min. each)
                             American Woodcock ecology - David Krementz
                             Prairie landscapes and management - MDC staff
                             Wetland Restoration - Ducks Unlimited

9:00 pm Brief Orientation for Saturday

Saturday, February 21

6:00 - 10:00    Field Trips begin * another change to see the abundant bird life in the Schell-
                              Osage/Taberville Prairie/Wah kon tah Prairie areas. Trips leave from Nevada,
                              El Dorado, or Schell-Osage between 6 and 8 am.

10:00 - 11:00   Gather and register at Schell Community Building (receive blind assignments)

11:00           Presentation on Schell-Osage Ecology

11:30           Lunch and Presentation on Schell-Osage Management & Regulations

1:00            Outdoor Clinic
                                          Retriever demonstrations * live demonstration in a wetland setting

                                          Wetland ecology & management * wetland managers discuss the vision,                                                                                     management tools, natural and man-made obstacles, and the benefits of
                                          wetlands to wildlife and man.

                                           Digi-scoping * Learn the new techniques of using your digital camera and
                                           you bird spotting scope to take close up images of birds, butterflies, frogs,
                                           and other difficult to photograph critters.

                                           Waterfowl identification in flight and on the water * Learn how to tell one
                                           duck from another by key characters of plumage, flight, and voice.

                                           Use of decoys & calls * Main demonstration will be done in the duck blinds

3:30            Meet at appropriate pool parking lots for duck blind boat trips.
At Dark                Return to Schell-Osage Headquarters for snacks and beverages.
