I subscribe to BIRDCHAT. Periodically, Michael Shepard posts URLs to new photos he has taken. He has a wonderful collection of gull photos, which should be of great value to anyone trying to ID gulls. (See http://www.birdinfo.com/Gull.html) . Today, he posted a great shot of a Long-tailed Jaeger. See http://www.birdinfo.com/ImageGallery_035.html

The Long-tailed Jaeger shot is especially valuable since it demonstrates the bill up close and personal and in profile. Compare the bill of the bird in the photo to Sibley's illustration on page 196 of The Sibley Guide to Birds. You can see what Sibley means when he says that the "nail covers about half of bill" and the "gonydeal angle [is] about midbill". These are crucial field marks in separating juvenile Long-taileds from juvenile Parasitics.

Happy New Year!
