At about 3:30 today in South Shores, Tom Borman spotted a small scaly dove near some feeders. He, Connie Alwood and I studied it for about 20 minutes. It was smaller than a Mourning Dove by direct comparison. The plumage appeared scaly with feathers with dark edges creating a scalloped effect. The tail was long with a brownish center bordered by black with white outer tail feathers. Tom reported that in flight the wings were rufous, although I did not see this myself. These characteristics appear to be certain for Inca Dove. The bird was quite skittish and tended to flush when anyone moved or at loud noises (like a tripod being opened or a car door).

Directions: From St. Charles go east on RT 94. Turn left on Rt. B and follow it past the St. Charles City Airport. Then turn right on Seeberger Rd. From that turn left on to South Shores. Follow this road until the first turn off (Harbor Grove(?)) that leads to the South Shores Marina. The bird was seen near some feeds at the house at the intersection of South Shores and Harbor Grove.

Please be careful not to annoy the residents.

David Becher
