Despite seven inches of Snow on the ground and most of the water frozen
over, 8 teams had a great time and found some very good birds.
Highlights included 2 groups with AMERICAN PIPITS, 4 LEAST SANDPIPERS
feeding on the edge of ice flows, 3 very cold WHITE PELICANS, multiple
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 14 SHORT-EARED OWLS (13 flying around in the middle
of the day), multiple LE CONTE'S SPARROWS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, and
COMMON SNIPE hanging out amidst the snow drifts. Despite the ice, we
found all four geese, and scattered groups of ducks that had most of the
expected birds. The count ended with roughly 94 species, only 15 shy of
the state record! Thanks to Jim, Ellen, Lisa W., Nancy, Dave, Nan,
JoAnn, Lisa B., Charlie, Fred, Will, Kristy, Steve, Don, Mike, Emily,
Ben, Matt, Mark and Allen!
