Greetings all,

Eight people joined trip leader Elizabeth Kohler at Parkville Nature
Sanctuary/White Alloe Creek Conservation Area near the campus of Park
University (Parkville, Platte County, MO) on Sunday morning to look for
probable breeding residents and late migrants. Highlights here included
great looks at a pair of Louisiana Waterthrushes and at a pair of very
territorial Kentucky Warblers. A late male Magnolia Warbler was heard by
a few and seen by one participant. After covering the sanctuary, we drove
the short distance down to the Missouri River (where Main Street
dead-ends at the river next to the ball park) to see the nesting pair of
Western Kingbirds behind the transformer on the power pole across from
the ball park. Folks who live close to Parkville might want to keep an
eye on this nest, as this is at least the 4th year in a row in which
Western Kingbirds have nested here. The pair appear to be incubating eggs
at the moment, so hatchlings should not be far off. Walking west along
the gravel road that follows the river, the group observed, among other
things, a pair of both Mockingbirds and Brown Thrashers, an Eastern
Kingbird, a conveniently perched No. Rough-winged Swallow and Baltimore
and Orchard Orioles. Several Mulberry trees along this road attracted
both fruit-eating birds and birders with those delicious ripe berries.
